Cavaliers take 3-of-4 in season-opening series at Brookhaven

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County baseball team, ranked 15th in the NJCAA, opened its 2020 season in Farmer Ranch, Texas against Brookhaven College February 6-7. The Cavaliers took three of the four games against the Bears. 

JCCC opened with the series with a 10-5 win, followed by a 7-6 loss. The Cavaliers took both games on the second day, winning 7-4 and 11-0. 

Freshman outfielder Quinton Hall had a great start to his collegiate career helping the 15th-ranked Cavaliers to a 3-1 week against Brookhaven. Hall hit at a .714 clip (10-for-14) with two doubles, two triples, a home run, eight runs scored and eight driven in. 

Freshman first baseman Alex Austin and sophomore outfielder Jackson Galloway were also impressive over the series. Austin hit .545 (6-for-11) with three doubles, three runs scored and three driven in.  Galloway hit .500 (5-for-10) and completed a series cycle with two singles, a double, triple and home run. He also scored three times and drove in three runs. 

Wichita State sophomore transfer infielder Brady Slavens and sophomore outfielder Landon Wood also collected five hits each over the weekend.  Slavens also had three RBIs. 

On the hill, freshman right-hander Zane Barr was the opening day starter for the Cavaliers and picked up the win. He allowed two hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts over three innings of work. 

Freshman right-hander Matt Ronnebaum took over in the fourth and logged three innings in relief, allowing one run with six strikeouts. 

Freshman left-hander Jay Long was solid in his four innings of relief in the second game. He allowed one unearned runs and struck out four batters. 

In the third game, freshman lefty CC Crain got the win. He pitched five innings and allowed wo runs with seven strikeouts.  Sophomore right-hand stopper Will Heller picked up his first career save. 

In the final game, sophomore right-hander Zach Todd, freshman right-hander Danny Trehey and sophomore right-hander Paul Rector combined for a five inning shutout. Todd pitched the first three innings, followed by Trehey in the fourth and Rector closed out the game. 

Johnson County is scheduled to host Ellsworth Community College in a four-game series Friday and Saturday, February 15-16. First pitch both days is noon, followed by 3 p.m., starts for the second games each day.
