Four Cavaliers earn all-conference recogntion

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced their 2018-19 basketball all-conference teams recently, and four members of the Region VI champion Johnson County Cavaliers were recognized. 

Sophomore forward David Turner and sophomore guard Nick Larkin were first-team selections. Turner was also named the D-II Defensive Player of the Year, the first in team history. Sophomore guard General Williams was a second-team selection and freshman guard JaQuaylon Mays earned third-team honors. 

These four players have helped the Cavaliers to a 28-4 record, a share of the D-II conference title, a Region VI D-II title and a berth in the NJCAA D-II National Tournament March 19-23 in Danville, Ill. 

In his two season at Johnson County, Turner has been a wrecking crew in the paint to opposing team, particularly this season. He leads the conference and ranks second in the NJCAA with 93 blocked shots. He as tallied 154 career blocks, both totals are school records. Turner also leads the conference in offensive rebounds (87), defensive rebounds (186) total rebounds (273) and rebound average (8.5). 

Turner averages 13.5 points per game and leads the conference in field goal accuracy at 65.6 percent. He has scored in double figures 24 times this season, including four games of 20 or more points. He also has recorded nine game with 10-plus rebounds, has six double-doubles and became just the third player in team history to record a triple-double. 

Five times this season Turner was selected the D-II Conference Player of the Week, earning the honor in weeks 10, 11, 12, 15 and 16. 

Larkin is averaging 13.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game, and his shooting 52.6 from the field and 80.6 at the free throw line. He leads the conference and ranks third in the NJCAA in assists with 191. That total ranks as the eighth-best season at JCCC. He also leads the conference and ranks seventh in the NJCAA with a 6.4 assists-per game average. He also ranked among the conference leaders in made free throws (104-2nd), free throw accuracy (80.6-2nd), assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4-2nd), steals (57-2nd), total rebounds (192-7th) and rebounds average (6.4-7th). 

Larkin has scored in double figures 23 times this season, and topped 20 or more points six times. He also has produced four double-doubles and became just the second player to record a triple-double and the first to do it twice. 

Larkin was selected the D-II Conference Player of the Week three straight weeks, earning the honors in week 4, 5 and 6. He also earned all-region and all-conference second-team his freshman year. 

Williams is averaging 9.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists this year. He leads the team with 43 3-point shots and is shooting a team and conference-best 45.7 percent beyond the arch. That percentage also ranks him third on JCCC's season chart … His 43 treys are 10th most in the conference. Williams has scored in double figures 17 times and had three games of 20 or more points. 

Mays averages 7.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game in his first season at JCCC. He is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 41.5 percent from 3-point range. He has scored in double figures 10 times on the season, and once hit 20 points.
