Cavaliers post solid efforts against two high-quality opponents

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The current No. 1-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team faced off against two high-quality opponents this weekend at the Iowa Western Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 

The Cavaliers opened with a hard-fought 88-83 overtime victory over Sunrise Christen Academy on Friday evening, and capped the event with a narrow 73-72 loss to host Iowa Western Community College Saturday. Johnson County is now 11-2 on the season. 

In the game prior to playing in the Iowa Western Classic, sophomore guard JaQuaylon Mays poured in a career high 30 points. He was just two shy of that mark against Sunrise Christen Academy, finishing with 29 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and three steals. He hit 8-of-12 shots with two 3-pointers, and was 11-of-16 at the free throw line. 

Three other Cavaliers finished double digits scoring. Sophomore center Lukas Milner had 15 and hit 6-of-9 from the field.  Freshman guard Braijion Barnes hit 4-of-5 shots and all three free throws for 11 points, and sophomore guard Macaleb Hughes was 4-of-8 shooting with three free throws and finished with 11 points, eight boards and four assists. 

As a team, Johnson County hit 56 percent of their shots. 

Against Iowa Western, Johnson County shot 55 percent from the field, and 70 percent in the second half, but could pull out the victory at the end. 

Mays again was the leading scorer pouring in 23 points. Milner followed with a double-double of 17 points and 12 boards and Hughes and Barnes contributed nine and six points respectively. 

Johnson County will host Washburn University JV on Monday night at 7:30 p.m., and will close out the fall semester with home games again current No. 2-ranked North Iowa Area Community College Friday at 7 p.m., and Iowa Western Saturday at 4 p.m.
