Cavaliers move into a tie for first with win over Labette

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference with a  79-72 victory over Labette Wednesday at the JCCC Gymnasium. 

The Cavaliers (19-4/2-1) were led by sophomore guard JaQuaylon Mays who finished with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds. He hit 7-of-14 shots, and was 9-of-12 at the free throw line. On Tuesday he was awarded the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week for a fifth time this season. 

Sophomore center Lukas Milner also posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 boards. The conference leader in field goal percentage was 6-of-10 from the field, and 5-of-8 at the line. 

Other key contributors to the win were sophomore Macaleb Hughes (9 points, 6 rebounds), freshman Dale Talley III (8 points), sophomore Nic Slavin (8 points) and sophomore Isiah Sears (7 points ). 

Labette (13-8/1-2) Jaland Whitehead, who provided 20 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Bryson Dennis followed with 16 points. 

The Cavaliers travel to Hesston (13-7/1-2) for a conference match on Saturday afternoon. The Larks enter the contest coming off back-to-back losses to Kansas City Kansas and Highland. Johnson County has a commanding lead in the all-time series with Hesston, winning 43 of the 52 previous games. The Cavaliers swept the season series last year, winning 76-58 at home and 60-59 on the road.
