OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team took one step closer to qualifying for nationals for a second straight season after defeating Central Community College 3-0 Tuesday night at the JCCC Soccer Complex.
With the victory the Lady Cavaliers (16-0-3) secured their second consecutive Region 6 title and berth to the NJCAA North Plains District Championship. JCCC will host No. 16 Iowa Lakes Community College (14-6-1) Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.
Johnson County scored three first half goals while outshooting the Raiders 27-to-8 over the 90-minute match.
JCCC scored what proved to be the game winner in the fifth minute when sophomore forward Karsen Kohler lifted a perfect corner kick to the back post that sophomore forward Jenna Knight was able to control and finish for her ninth goal of the season. For Koehler it was her 14 assists on the year which ranks her tied for sixth in the country.
Freshman defender Ashley Chaput made in 2-0 in the 30th minute off a feed from sophomore midfielder Macy Malik. It was Chaput's fourth score on the season.
Sophomore All-American midfielder/defender Sydney Puetz closed out the scoring with powerful 40-yead shot that cleared Central's goalkeeper outstretched arm and landed in the upper left corner for her third goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Stoskopf stopped all five shots she faced to post her ninth shutout. She also lowered her goals against average to 0.10 which leads all NJCAA D-II goalkeepers.
