JCCC women’s soccer punches ticket to NJCAA D-II Championship

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament for the second straight year, only this time they will enter as the Plains District Champions.

The Lady Cavaliers held on for a 2-1 victory over No. 16-ranked Iowa Lakes Community College to capture the Nort Plains District Championship. Last year JCCC earned a spot in the tournament field by receiving an at-large bid after falling in the district championship. The Lady Cavaliers went on to finish runner-up to Jones College.

This is Johnson County's third overall trip to nationals, and second in Division II.  JCCC also qualified to the Division I tournament in 2009 and finished runner-up to Tyler Junior College.

The Lady Cavaliers took an early 1-0 lead when freshman forward Lily Marshall fired a shot past the Lakers goalkeeper off an assist from sophomore Karsen Koehler.  It was Marshall's eight goal of the season, and Koehler's 15 assist, which ranks her fourth in NJCAA D-II women's soccer.

It remained a one goal advantage for the Lady Cavaliers until the 61st minute. On a corner kick play, Iowa Lakes was called for a penalty in the box, awarding Jonson County a penalty kick opportunity. Koehler buried the kick in the middle right of the net for 2-nil lead with 29 minutes left. It was her ninth score on the year, and it would end up being her third game winning goal.

The Lakers managed to cut their deficit in half, when Ronniellia Bub scored a breakaway goal in the 76th minute. It was just the seventh goal scored on the Lady Cavaliers this season. JCCC managed to stop any other Laker offensive pushes the final 13 minutes to secure the win and championship.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddox Fergus stopped six of the seven shots she faced and improved to 9-0-1 on the year. She is now 19-2-1 for her career.

Johnson County (17-0-3) will most likely earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament behind No. 1-ranked and undefeated Northwest Mississippi Community College (18-0-0), the Gulf South District champion.

The other district champions are St. Charles (Central), Anne Arundel (East), Heartland (Great Lakes) Rock Valley (Midwest), Pensacola State (South Atlantic) and Phoenix (West). The tournament field will also include four at-large bids.
