Lady Cavaliers hand Highland its first loss of the season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Sophomore guard Krystal Rice poured in a career high 26 points to lead the No. 8 Johnson County Lady Cavaliers to an 90-75 upset victory over the No. 3-ranked and previously unbeaten Highland Scotties on Saturday afternoon.  Highland's 75-point total was 19 below their season average entering the game. With the victory, Johnson County improves to 22-3 on the season and 4-2 in the conference. Highland falls to 19-1 and 5-1. 

A back-and-forth game through the first three quarters, Johnson County seized control in the fourth, outscoring Highland by 14, 32-to-18.  Rice scored 10 of her 26 in the quarter. 

The Lady Cavaliers ability to get the free throw line was key. Johnson County was 31-of-45 for the game, while the Scotties had only 16 attempts, making 10. JCCC also outrebounded Highland 41-27. 

Rice hit 8-of-12 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and 7-of-9 free throws. She also had seven rebounds and two assists. 

Starting guards Dallie Hoskinson and Christen Curry each finished with 11 points. Hoskinson also contributed eight rebounds and three assists. 

Freshmen D'Aysa Collier-Williams and Jaylen Townsend each contributed 10 points off the bench, and freshman Lajahda Boyland added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. 

Erin Randle led Highland with 21 points, followed by Tiana Gipson with 17. 

Johnsons County is back in action Wednesday, February 12, as they travel to Fort Scott, Kan., to take on the Lady Greyhounds.
