Fast start powers JCCC to an 84-47 win over KCKCC in region semifinal

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team raced out to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, downing cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas 84-47 in the Region 6 Tournament semifinal. 

Johnson County (30-1) will face Labette on Saturday, March 5 at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina with a noon tipoff.  The winner will advance to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament in Port Huron, Mich., March 15-19. Sophomore guard Shonyah Hawkins came in off the bench to score a season-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Freshman guard Kierra Prim recorded her 16th double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She hit 6-of-11 shots and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

Sophomore guard Jaylen Townsend followed with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, and grabbed six boards. 

As a team the Lady Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the field, while holding the Blue Devils to 32 percent.  Johnson County also had a big advantage on the glass, outrebounding KCKCC by 32, 52-to-20. 

Other key efforts were turned by Jayde Williams (7 points), Aryannah Harrison (6 points), Nariyah Simmons (3 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists); Gabby Fuller (4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals). 

De'Jaria Guillory led Kansas City Kansas with 15 points, followed by Lacy Witcomb with 13.
