OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team raced out to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, downing cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas 84-47 in the Region 6 Tournament semifinal.
Johnson County (30-1) will face Labette on Saturday, March 5 at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina with a noon tipoff. The winner will advance to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament in Port Huron, Mich., March 15-19. The game can be heard on 1660 The Bet on the Audacy App or seen on the KJCCC Sports Network.
Sophomore guard Shonyah Hawkins came in off the bench to score a season-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Freshman guard Kierra Prim recorded her 16th double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She hit 6-of-11 shots and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Jaylen Townsend followed with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, and grabbed six boards.
As a team the Lady Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the field, while holding the Blue Devils to 32 percent. Johnson County also had a big advantage on the glass, outrebounding KCKCC by 32, 52-to-20.
Other key efforts were turned by Jayde Williams (7 points), Aryannah Harrison (6 points), Nariyah Simmons (3 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists); Gabby Fuller (4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals).
De'Jaria Guillory led Kansas City Kansas with 15 points, followed by Lacy Witcomb with 13.
