In a battle of top-ranked teams, JCCC prevails over Labette 78-74

OVERLAND PARK, Kan -  The No. 1-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team faced its biggest test of the 2021-22 season Wednesday night taking on the No. 4-ranked Labette Community in Parsons, Kan.

Up until facing the Cardinals, JCCC had breezed through its first 16 games, winning by double digits in every contest. 

The Lady Cavaliers appeared to be on their way to a 17-straight double digit victory racing out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, but Labette fought back and cut the deficit to seven after two periods. 

The teams were fairly even the final two quarters and the Lady Cavalier held on for a 78-74 win and remained unbeaten at 17-0. Labette fell to 10-3 on the season. 

For the first time this season, all five Johnson County scored in double figures led by sophomore guard Gabby Fuller with 16 points. She hit 9-of-6 shots, including both 3-point attempts, and was 2-of-4 at the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and had two assists.

Freshman guard Mackenzie Hart and sophomore guard Nariyah Simmons each followed with 14 points. Hart was 4-of-9 with a pair of 3-pointers and hit 4-of-6 at the line. She also had a team high four assists.  Simmons was 4-of-8 shooting with a trey and hit 5-of-6 charity shots. She also had four boards. 

JCCC's top two scorers this season, guards Kierra Prim and Jaylen Townsend, each chipped in 10 points.  Prim also had a team high 10 rebounds for her 10 double-double of the season. Townsend finished with six rebounds. 

Johnson County will host Hesston on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Larks come in with a record of 6-8 overall, but stand 0-3 in conference play.
