Second-ranked Lady Cavaliers enter winter break perfect at 15-0

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Head coach Ben Conrad and his No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team have reached the halfway point of the 2021-22 season boasting a perfect 15-0 record after handing Southeast a 72-50 loss Saturday afternoon in Beatrice, Neb. 

While 15-0 is impressive, the way the Lady Cavaliers have reached 15 straight victories is even more impressive. All 15 have been by double digits, including a 14-point win over No. 6 Illinois Central and a 12-point win over defending national champion and No. 4-ranked Lake Land. 

Through 15 games, JCCC is averaging 80.9 points per game, while holding opponents to just 43.5, third-best in the NJCAA.

Second-year freshman guard Kierra Prim has emerged as the team's top performer to date, averaging 17.1 points and 10.2 rebounds. She has scored in double figures in 13 games and has topped 10+ rebounds eight times. In the recent victory over Southeast, she recorded her seventh double-double with 20 points and season-high 17 rebounds.  She leads the conference in scoring average and is second in rebound average. She also leads the conference field goal accuracy making 55.4 percent of her attempts. 

Reigning National Player of the Year Jalen Townsend is second on the team in scoring with an average of 14.1 per game. That ranks her sixth in the conference. She has topped double figures in scoring 10 times this season highlighted by a season high 29 in a win over Southwestern. Townsend and ranks second in the conference shooting 86.3 percent at the free throw line. 

Freshman point guard Mackenzie Hart is the national leader in total assists with 79, and her 5.3 per game average leads the conference. She has been the team's top assist performer in 14 of the 15 games.

Sophomore guard Gabby Fuller is having another solid campaign this year averaging 7.2 points and 8.5 rebounds. Her 111 total rebounds are second in the conference, and she has four games with 10 or more boards. 

Johnson County is also getting solid efforts from newcomers Nariyah Simmons and Shonyah Hawkins.  Simmons, a freshman guard, is averaging 7.8 points, and Hawkins, a sophomore All-American guard at Grand Rapids Community College last year, averages 7.4 per game.
