Women’s Basketball announces its 2019-20 team awards

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women's basketball team and two-time national coach of the year Ben Conrad announced its team MVP, Cavalier and Academic award winners for the 2019-20 season today. 

Sophomore guard Krystal Rice (Flint Hamady HS / Flint, Mich.) was selected the team's most valuable player. The Cavalier award was given to sophomore guard Dallie Hoskinson (Hugoton HS / Hugoton, Kan.) and the top academic performer was sophomore guard Christen Curry (Olathe Northwest HS / Olathe, Kan.). These three were part of a squad that posted a 28-5 record, a runner-up finish at the Region VI Tournament and a No. 7 national ranking. 

Rice, who transferred to JCCC from Indiana State,  had a stellar sophomore season in 2019-20. She earned NJCAA Division II All-America second-team honors and first-team All-Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference and All-Region Vi recognition. She played in 30 games with 29 starts, and led Johnson County in scoring with 14.2 points per game. Rice finished the year second in the conference in 3-point field goals made (84) and free throw percentage (78.8) while also ranking fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (37.5). Her 84 treys tie for 10th-best in a season at JCCC.  Rice scored in double figures in a team-high 23 games, including a career-high 29 points in a win at Hesston late in the regular season. She hit eight 3-point baskets against the Larks which tied the third-best game in team history. Twice during the season, Rice was selected the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, earning the honors in weeks 13 and 15. Rice will continue her playing career at Ball State University next year. 

Hoskinson earned third-team All-Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference honors this season after averaging 9.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while starting all 32 contests for the Lady Cavaliers. She hit 50.2 percent from the field (120-for-239) while knocking down 75.8 percent from the foul line (69-of-91). She led the team and ranked third in the conference in rebound average and was second in the conference in total rebounds (271).  She also led the league in assist average and total assists with 168, 86 more than the next closest player. Her assist total ranks eighth all-time at JCCC.   In 2019-20 Hoskinson reached double figures in points 20 times, rebounds 12 times and assists in four games. She also had 10 double-doubles and three triple-doubles, becoming the only player in team history with multiple triple-doubles. She was named the KJCCC D-II and NJCAA National Player of the Week for Nov. 25-Dec. 1, after recording her third triple-double of the year. In two seasons, she totals 525 points, 367 rebounds, 222 assists and 95 steals while leading the team to a 55-10 record. Hoskinson will continue her playing career at the University of Sioux Falls. 

Curry too helped the Lady Cavaliers basketball program to a record of 55-10 over the last two seasons. This past campaign, Curry started in all 33 games and averaged 7.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Her 82 total assists were second on the team and in the Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference. She shot 44.8 percent from the field (94-of-212) while scoring in double figures nine times, including a career-high 17 in a 97-67 win at Southwestern on Nov. 26. For her career, she averaged 5.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists over 63 games.  Curry twice earned JCCC student-athlete academic honors and in 2019 earned NJCAA first-team All-Academic honors with a 4.0 grade point average. Curry has committed to Colorado Christian University.
