OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women's basketball team, ranked 10th in the final NJCAA D-II poll, advanced to the Region VI semifinals with a 75-50 victory over Fort Scott Community College, Wednesday night at JCCC. The Lady Cavaliers will now travel across town to face No. 7-ranked and No. 1 seed Kansas City Kansas Community College Saturday, March 2. The Lady Blue Devils swept the season series for the first time since 1999, winning at JCCC 69-64 on Feb. 11, and 64-60 at KCKCC on Feb. 23 in the season's final game. That win clinched the Blue Devils' first ever DII Jayhawk championship.
In the win over For Scott, freshman guard Brandi Thibeaux posted her best game as a collegiate player pouring in a season-high 16 points. She hit 5-of-7 shots, including two 3-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. She also hauled down four rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
Sophomore guard Jacionna Stowers and freshman forward KK Jackson-Morris also finished in double figures. Stowers has 12 points and hit three more 3-pointers to up her season total to 90 and career total to 185. She needs just five more to set a new career standard at Johnson County. Her 90 treys this season lead the conference and rank sixth in the NJCAA. Jackson-Morris contributed 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Other key efforts were turned in by freshman forward Julia Johnson and sophomore forward Sydni Tears. Johnson finished with six points and seven rebounds, and Tears has six points and six boards.
Ally McKenzie and Jada Perry led Fort Scott with 13 and 12 points respectively.
