OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Making the adjustment from high school basketball to the college ranks can be difficult, but while it is just one game into a long season, two newcomers on the Johnson County women's basketball roster gave a glimpse of what might be this season.

Guard Taliyah Scott from Independence, Mo. and forward Yar Manyiel from North Kansas City, Mo., helped power the No. 4-ranked Cavaliers to a 69-38 victory over Missouri Valley JV on Wednesday in the team's season opener.

Scott hit 6-of-16 shots, including two 3-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line for a team high 18 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists.

Manyiel was even more efficient from the field, hitting 6-of-10 shots and a free throw for 13 points. She was also credited with four rebounds and two steals.

Head coach Ben Conrad describes Scott as a dynamic combo guard that can impact both side of the floor and Manyiel as a long, athletic wing with a major upside.

Conrad also got solid efforts from two of his returnees, guards Saige Grampsas and Jazzy Klinge. Grampsas was also in double figures with 12 points to go along with five boards, three steals and two assists.  Klinge led the team with 10 rebounds and added six points and two blocks.

Freshman guard Amani Henry who was the third freshman in the starting lineup contributed six points and six points in her collegiate debut.

Johnson County returns to the hardwood on Sunday when they host William Penn JV at 2 p.m. They will be vying to tie a school record for the longest home winning sreak at 54 games that ran from February 7, 2015 to February 7, 2018. JCCC current 53-game string began back on Febuary 8, 2020 with a 90-75 win over No. 8 Highland.
