JCCC survives Highland’s upset bid to remain undefeated

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – No. 1 Johnson County Community College survived an upset bid from Highland Community College Wednesday night as the Lady Cavaliers pulled out a 72-64 win at Ben Allen Field House in Highland, Kan. Johnson County improved to 19-0 on the season and to 3-0 in conference play. 

The Lady Cavaliers trailed by trailed by six after two quarters, but roared back in the third quarter, outscoring the Scotties 27-to-11 to go up 10 to start the final period. 

Kierra Prim was JCCC's top performer posting her 10th double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds. She hit 9-of-17 shots and was 5-of-9 at the free throw line. 

Nariyah Simmons and Shonyah Hawkins recorded new season highs with each pouring in 19 points. Simmons nailed a season-high five 3-point baskets and was 4-of-6 at the free throw line. She also had three rebounds and two assists. 

Hawkins was 9-of-19 shooting with one free charity shot. She also recorded six steals, the most by any player this year, and had four rebounds and three assists. 

Joze Baker was Highland top performer with 23 points off the bench. 

Johnson County will look to improve to 20-0 on Saturday when they host Neosho County Community College at 2 p.m. The Panthers (12-5/3-2) come in the heels of back-to-back road losses. JCCC leads the all-time series with Neosho County 63-14.
