No. 2 JCCC pulls away in 4th quarter for 66-54 win over #4 Lake Land

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Trailing by a point to open the fourth quarter, the No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team outscored the defending nation champion and No. 4-ranked Lake Land College 21-8 for a 66-54 victory.  The Lady Cavaliers lost to the Lakers 53-49 in the NJCAA D-II national championship game last year. 

Johnson County now stands 13-0 on the season with two games this week before entering the winter break. They host Tabor JV Monday night, December 6 at 5:30, and travel to Beatrice, Neb., to face Southeast on Saturday, December 11. JCCC defeated The Storm last week 77-23 at JCCC Gymnasium. 

Sophomore guard Shonyah Hawkins, a NJCAA D-II All-American last year at Grand Rapids CC, led the Lady Cavaliers with her best effort of the 2021-22 season. She finished with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting. She also tallied seven rebounds. 

JCCC's leading scorer and rebounder this season, guard Kierra Prim, followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. She also had four steals. 

Freshman guard Nariyah Simmons knocked down three 3-point shots and finished with 13 points, her third double figure scoring game of the season. 

Freshman guard Mackenzie Hart flirted with a double-double with eight points and eight assists. She also grabbed five boards.  Sophomore guard Gabby Fuller led JCCC on the glass with 12 rebounds. She also chipped in six points. 

Joslyn Speaars led Lake Land with 21 points and eight rebounds.
