Lady Cavaliers escape KCKCC with a 62-58 win

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 4-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team managed to escape Kansas City Kansas with a 62-58 victory to remain undefeated at 16-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Lady Cavaliers jumped out early, building a 16-point lead during the first period only to see KCKCC fight back the next three quarters, and have a two-point lead with 1:38 to play.  

Freshman guard Jazzy Klinge's only bucket tied the game at 58 with a minute left. Sophomore guard Lisa Thomas gave JCCC the lead with a layup off a steal with 20 seconds and sophomore guard Nariyah Simmons sealed the victory with two free throws with three ticks left. 

Thomas and Simmons each finished with 15 points and were a combined 9-for-9 at the free throw line. Simmons was the team's top rebounder with nine. Thomas had six boards, four assists and four steals.  

But the leader for the Lady Cavaliers was sophomore guard Mackenzie Hart, last week's KJCCC D-II Player of the Week. Hart finished with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting with two 3-pointers, and 6-of-9 at the charity stripe. She also had six rebounds and two steals. 

KCKCC was led by Rebecca Christodoulou with 13 points followed by Jady Johnson with 10.  

Johnson County will host Fort Scott on Wednesday, January 18 at 5:30 p.m.
