JCCC overwhelms Hesston in the Region 6 Tournament opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team put its foot on the gas right from the start en route to a 100-43 drubbing of Hesston in the first round of the Region 6 playoffs. The Lady Cavaliers improved to 60-0 all-time against the Larks, and 12-0 in postseason play. The 57-point win is the second largest against Hesston in the playoffs. 

Four starters and five total players finished in double figures to power the Lady Cavaliers offense.  Sophomore guard Gabby Fuller poured in a game-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers, and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. She also six rebounds and two steals. 

Starting guards Kierra Prim, Jaylen Townsend and Nariyah Simmons followed with 15, 14 and 13 points respectively. Prim was 4-of-6 shooting and hit 7-of-10 at the line. She also grabbed a game-high eight boards. 

Townsend was 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. She also had five rebounds. Simmons hit 5-of-10 shots with a trey, and both of her free throw attempts. Johnson County shot 54 percent as a team. 

Shonyah Hawkins led JCCC's bench with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. 

Kelbe Edward was Hesston's to scorer with eight points. 

Johnson County (29-1) will host Kansas City Kansas in the semifinal round on Wednesday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m.  The Lady Devils handed JCCC its only setback on the season, 61-59 on February 5. Nine days later JCCC avenged that loss with an 93-50 blowout win at home.
