Layla Scott hits 9 3-pointers as Lady Cavaliers blow out Southwestern 83-38

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman guard Layla Scott is off a tremendous start to her collegiate career. Through five games the Truman standout is averaging 18.6 points and is shooting just over 44 percent from 3-point range. 

On Saturday afternoon she hit nine 3-pointers and scored a season-high 27 points to help her team to an 83-38 victory over Southwestern Community College. She hit 9-of-13 shots beyond the arc and was 9-of-14 overall.  Her nine 3-point baskets tie the third most made in a game in program history.

Head coach Ben Conrad also got another key effort from a freshman. Guard Tamia Smith out of Blue Valley Northwest recorded her best outing in this short season, finishing with a double-double of 17 points and a game high 14 rebounds.

Also finishing in double figures scoring was freshman guard Kara Stricklin with 12 points, hitting 4-of-11 3-point baskets. 

Sophomore forward Yar Manyiel and sophomore guard Taliyah Scott both flirted with posting a double-double. Manyiel tallied eight points and 11 rebounds, while Scott finished with eight points and eight assists. 

Southwestern was led by Brooklyn Hall with 15 points and nine rebounds. 

Johnson County (5-0) has three home games on tap this week beginning with Southeast (3-1) on Tuesday, November 12 at 5:30 p.m., No. 15 Palm Beach State (4-0) comes to JCCC on Friday, November 15 followed by No. 6 Rock Valley (2-2) on Saturday, November 16.
