Strong bench play helps lead Lady Cavalier to road win over Southwestern

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's basketball team received 33 points and 21 rebounds off the bench to help lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 72-49 victory at Southwestern Community College Tuesday night to remain unbeaten at 11-0.

Freshman guard Jamya McPherson led the charge of JCCC's bench with 14 points. She went 5-for-9 from the field with a 3-pointer and hit 3-of-5 free attempts. She also had four rebounds, an assist and a steal. 

Sophomore forward Aa'Mya Stacker nearly posed a double-double finishing with nine points and eight rebounds She was 4-of-6 shooting with a free throw. 

Freshman starting guard Layla Scott was the team's top scorer with 18 points, hitting 5-of-10 shots beyond the arc to up her season total made to 42, most in NJCAA Division II women's basketball. 

Other key efforts were turned by freshman forward Tamia Smith (8 points), sophomore guard Maizen Williams (6 points), freshman guard Heaven Smith (6 points) and sophomore guard Taliyah Scott (7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 points). 

Southwestern (1-6) was led Sharmaine Tapling with 18 points followed by Gabby Dwanyen with 13 points and eight boards.

Johnson County head southeast for the Thanksgiving break to take on St. Thomas University JV in Miami Gardens, Florida on Sunday, December 1, then return home to host Missouri Valley College JV on Thursday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m.
