OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's basketball team improved to 10-0 on the season after posting a pair victories at the Des Moines Area Community College Classic over the weekend in two extremely different ways.
The Lady Cavaliers (10-0) opened the weekend with a 108-34 blowout over Midland University JV Friday afternoon and followed with a 57-48 nailbiter on Saturday against Rochester Community and Technical College (4-3).
In the win over Midland, freshmen guard Layla Scott and Jamya McPherson led the attack each pouring in 19 points. Scott was 7-of-13 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point range. McPherson hit 8-of-12 shots with one 3-pointer and was 2-of-4 at the line. She also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and was second in assists with five.
Freshman forward Tamia Smith hit 6-of-8 shots to post 13 points and sophomore forward Aa'Mya Stacker also chipped in 13 going 6-of-9 from the field. Each also pulled down five boards.
Sophomore point guard Taliyah Scott flirted with a triple-double finishing with nine points, a season-high nine assists and seven rebounds and freshman guard Kara Stricklin knocked down three treys to post nine points.
Laura Herndon led Midland JV with 21.
Against Rochester C&T, Johnson County found themselves in very unfamiliar territory being tied at halftime. After giving up 30 first half points, JCCC held the Yellowjackets to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters to pull out the nine point win.
The Lady Cavaliers had one player finish in double figures scoring in the game. Stacker hit 4-of-5 shots including a 3-pointer and hit both free throw attempts for 11 points followed by Layla Scott with nine, McPherson with eight, Taliyah Scott with seven and sophomore forward Yar Manyiel with six. Manyiel was the top rebounds with eight.
Rochester had two player reach double digits led by Kara Goetzinger with 12 followed by Aniya Reuben with 11.
Johnson county will play two more road games this week. They travel to Creston, Iowa to take on Southwestern Community College on Tuesday, November 26 then head to Miami, Florida to take on St. Thomas University JV on Sunday, December 1.
