OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's basketball team plowed through another opponent Tuesday night, defeating Southeast Community College 104-44 at the JCCC Gymnasium. With the victory, the Lady Cavaliers improved to 6-0 on this young season and extended their home court winning streak to 75 straight games.
Johnson County also upped its record in the all-time series with the Bobcats to 28-1 and their 60-point victory is the largest margin in the 29 games against Southeast.
Johnson County took control early, leading 22-6 after the first period. Southeast opened the second quarter with a little surge scoring 10 points in the first three-minutes, 35-seconds, but the Lady Cavaliers defense stiffened, and the Bobcats did not score another basket until the 8:34 mark in the third quarter, a span of seven-minutes, 51-seconds.
After Southeast ended its dry spell, the Lady Cavaliers had the game in hand leading 53-18.
The star of the game was freshman guard Layla Scott finishing with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting with three 3-point baskets and made all four of her free throw attempts. She also was the game leader with six assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Scott has scored in double figures all six games and leads the team with a scoring average of 18.7 per game. She also has knocked down 26 3-point buckets, making just over four per game.
Sophomore forward Yar Manyiel also had a strong night posting 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Also finishing in double figures were freshman guard Tamia Smith with 13, sophomore guard Aryanna Grassity with 12 and sophomore center Aa'Mya Stacker with 10. Smith also had four rebounds, Grassity had five boards, four assists and two steals and Stacker pulled down five rebounds.
Other key contributors were sophomore guard Taliyah Scott (9 points, six rebounds, four assists), freshman guard Jamya McPherson (7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and freshman guard Kara Stricklin (6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals).
Johnson County will face its first big tests of the season this weekend when the host No. 9-ranked Palm Beach State College (4-0) on Friday night and No. 19-ranked Rock Valley College (2-2) Saturday afternoon. The opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., on Friday, and 2 p.m., on Saturday.
