Lady Cavaliers return to court in nonconference matchup

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County women's basketball team will return to the court after its winter break with a nonconference matchup against North Platte (Neb.) Community College at 2 p.m., Wednesday at JCCC Gymnasium. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.

The Lady Cavaliers enter the contest with a perfect record of 15-0 and a No. 2 national ranking. JCCC also ranks second in team defense holding opponents to 43.5 points, while the offense is pouring 80.9 per game on average.  All 15 Johnson County victories have been by double digits. 

Through the first 15 games, second-year freshman guard Kierra Prim has been the team's top performer averaging a double-double of 17.1 points and 10.2 rebounds. Her 153 total rebounds are the third most in the country and her 256 total points rank fourth. 

Last year's National Player of the Year Jaylen Townsend is also having another strong campaign averaging 14.1 points, 3.9 rebounds while connecting on 86.3 of her free throw attempts. 

North Platte enters the contest with a 10-4 record and received votes in the latest NJCAA D-II Basketball Poll. The Knights also entered the break posting an impressive 77-64 win over No. 14 Kansas City Kansas on December 11. 

The Knights have three players averaging double figures in points led by Kayla Pope at 15.6 per game. Diamond Moore-Heath is a close second at 15.1 per game. She also is the team's second leading rebounder averaging 8.9 per game. 

This is Johnson County's final nonconference contest for the season. They open conference play on January 12 when they host cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
