No. 2 JCCC women’s basketball looks to keep win train rolling as they open second half of the season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  The Johnson County women's basketball team has raced out to a perfect 14-0 start to its 2023-24 season, highlighted by an impressive 58-56 victory at Moberly Area in their performance back on December 9. 

The Lady Cavaliers will look to continue that run as they embark on the second of the season Thursday night in Trenton, Mo., against No. 12 ranked North Central Missouri. The Pirates enter the contest with an 11-2 mark, but one of those losses was a 76-57 setback to JCCC back on November 27 in Overland Park. 

Through 14 games this season, Johnson County boasts the No. 1 defense in the country, allowing just 45.0 points per game. Teams also are also only making 28.4 percent of their shot attempts, second best nationally.  Offensively, JCCC pours in on average 81.4 per game, best in the conference and 11th nationally. 

Leading the offense is sophomore guard Saige Grampsas at 14.0 points per game, the third best scoring average in the conference. She has reached double figures in 12 of the team's 14 games including two games of 20+ points. She also is averaging 4.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. She also leads the team and conference with 49 made 3-point baskets. 

Sophomore guard Jazzy Klinge is nearly averaging a double-double over the first half to the season, scoring 11.9 per game while hauling in 9.4 boards per game, tops in the conference. She has topped double digits scoring nine times, six times in rebounds and has three double-double efforts. She is also shooting a blistering 64.2 percent from the field, which leads the conference and ranks second in NJCAA D-II.

Freshman guard Taliya Scott is off to a strong start to her collegiate career. A 1,000+ point scorer at Truman High, Scott is averaging 11.7 points and reached double figures 10 times. She also is averaging 5.8 assists, which leads the conference and ranks 10th nationally, and 4.9 rebounds. 

Sophomore forward Grace Lynch is the team's fourth leading scorer and also averages double figures at 10.5 per game. She is connecting on 43.1 percent of her shot attempts and leads the team with a free throw percentage of 82.4 percent.

Three other freshmen off to solid starts to their collegiate careers are guards Maizen Williams and Amaya Marshall and forward Amani Henry. Williams averages 6.5 points, Marshall 6.1 points, and Henry 6.0 points, along with 7.1 rebounds, second most on the team.
